Plumpaw was not the type of cat who asked a lot of questions. Sure, he had them. After all wasn’t that natural for a cat of his age? However, that meant very little. Usually, if he couldn’t find the answer out himself it remained an unanswered question, until eventually another cat revealed the answer. Or at least that was what commonly happened. Yet right there and then, he did have one question, and one he wanted to ask as it balanced on the tip of his tongue, the tom lifting his head from his paws, and blinking into the darkness of the den.
What did sunningrocks look like at night? He couldn’t say he’d ever been there as the moon hung high, lighting up the shadows in a way the sun could never do. Right there and then, he could see the pale evening light slinking in through the den entrance, glinting off the pelts of clanmates close to the small gap. Beyond the snores and noises of his denmates it was hard to tell if anyone else was conscious, but, he supposed that didn’t matter. What did was how he was going to solve the situation. Plumpaw lifted himself up slightly, head held up and paws sitting carefully against the moss of his nest.
There was one solution, and that was going to see. But alone? He didn’t like doing too many things alone. Thankfully, he usually had a willing guide. Mottlepaw was only in the next nest, and by her breathing, he was pretty sure she was asleep. On her other side was Yewpaw, and he wrinkled his nose ever so slightly. He wanted Mottlepaw’s attention, but not so much her brothers, after all. His tail tip twitched against his side, before he slowly edged to his paws. For a moment he hesitated, before gently resting a paw on his friend’s shoulder, and nudging her. “Mottlepaw,” he whispered, leaning his head forward to speak close to her ear, in an attempt not to wake anyone else.
“I have a question,” he added, just in case. Truth be told, if she didn’t stir he’d just go back to sleep. But these moments of different thought were rare, and he didn’t like to let them slip by without some engagement.
